The Aftermath ...

By: amyford July 9th, 2008

It is always fun planning the celebrations and putting all the decorations up and the excitement doing all the preparations… but what about afterwards? You have been on your feet all day, your house is a disaster and all you want to do is have a glass of wine, put up your feet and talk about is Who Wore What and Who Said What….
There are ways to get the basics done that night and then save the rest for the next morning when you have had a goods nights rest!
1. When people offer to help clean-up right before they leave, don’t say “Oh no, I got it” – take advantage of the offer!! Even if it is something little like, “Can you just grab all the glasses in the living room and take to the kitchen on your way out?” You may not feel comfortable having this response to all of the guests but you should at least to your close friends. Every little bit helps.
2. Check around the house for any stains or spills. You want to tackle those before you go to bed and it sets in.
3. Put away all leftover food that you want to keep or send any home with to-go Tupperware with the guests.
4. Pick up all dishes around house and bring to kitchen. Throw away disposables and fill the ones to clean in the dishwasher – stuff as much as you can!!
5. Fill the sink with soapy water and let the rest of the dishes that couldn’t fit soak til in the morning.

The rest can wait … Enjoy the remainder of the evening and start thinking about when you can throw your next big event!

The Over Commercialized "LUAU"

By: amyford July 9th, 2008

You get invited to them every summer… you grill burgers, you swim in the pool, and it’s just not a luau without the plastic lei’s! I am not here to talk bad about this “luau” party, in fact, I am planning a party like this for my 2 year old daughter. She can wear her cute grass skirt and everyone swims – it’s a “luau” birthday party.
The way the luau has morphed into what it is today is not bad, but it is nice to recognize what a luau really is! I just got back from Maui and I got to experience first hand how the natives celebrate a luau. All the guests received sweet smelling fresh-flower leis as they arrived. Each table had beautiful centerpieces filled with birds of paradise, orchids and plumeria. The dancers were mesmerizing and beautiful – how their faces and arms stay so graceful while their bottom half is telling a completely different story. The men dancers wave and throw torches through the air with their faces painted. During dinner, someone with a ukulele walks around and plays for the guests enjoyment. I did not get to experience a live “roasting of the pig” although I do not think I would have enjoyed that tradition! Everyone needs to have this authentic luau experience at least once in their lifetime.
Hosting a “luau” can mean many different things… but one thing that you do have to keep in common is to actually celebrate what a “luau” is, which the Hawaiian definition means “a feast” – so fire up the grill and hang loose with your friends.
I hope that everyone can enjoy a fun “luau” this summer!
